macOS Design Themes
Jun 23, 2020 Apple Big Sur: Here's what makes new macOS 'biggest update to design in over a decade' Apple has revamped the macOS desktop in Big Sur in preparation for a future more aligned with iOS and iPadOS. This confirms the Fluent UI from Microsoft. Designer notes the similarity of the styles of Apple and Microsoft, Recalling how Apple ridiculed the similarity of the Windows Vista OS X. For example, here are the serial mayhem Windows Vista at the presentation of WWDC 2006. And 14 years later Apple is now adopting the trend of design at Microsoft.
Four primary themes differentiate macOS apps from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS apps. Keep these themes in mind as you imagine your app’s identity.
Flexible
People expect macOS apps to be intuitive, while simultaneously adaptable to their workflow through customization and flexibility. Many apps offer configurable preferences, customizable interfaces, and alternate ways of completing tasks. Windows can often be resized and interface elements hidden or repositioned. Tasks can be initiated from toolbars, menus, controls, keyboard shortcuts, the Touch Bar, accessibility features, and more. A flexible app facilitates learning through discoverability.
Expansive
Large, high-resolution displays are typical for most Mac users, and people often extend their workspace by connecting additional displays. Apps can leverage this expansiveness and provide value by utilizing a wide range of interface components—like tabs, sidebars, sheets, and panels—and supporting immersive features like full-screen mode.
Capable
Macs are extremely capable in terms of hardware and software. Apps can harness this power to offer an extensive range of features and workflows that meet a wide variety of simple, advanced, and niche user needs.

Focused
macOS is designed to keep the current task clear and in focus. Visual contrast, translucency, and a large drop shadow make it easy to differentiate the active window from inactive windows. Interfaces defer to content and related controls. Throughout the system, adornments are subtle and appropriate.
Following this morning’s WWDC keynote, Apple has quickly updated their Design Resources page, adding new elements introduced in iOS 12.
Prior to today, Apple had provided designers with iOS UI templates in formats for popular tools like Sketch and Adobe’s Photoshop and XD. For the first time, resources are now available for one of Apple’s own apps, Keynote. While built as a presentation tool, Keynote has become popular with many designers for prototyping applications. The app has even been the focus of design sessions at WWDC in previous years.
According to a tweet by Apple Design Evangelist Mike Stern, iPad UI elements and templates have also been added to iOS 12’s design resources. Designers will find several templates updated for the latest version of iOS, including system glyphs and app icons.
Resources for watchOS 5 and macOS Mojave do not yet appear to be available, but all of Apple’s iOS 12 resources can be downloaded now here.
