Some people would struggle to remember what their Mac's desktop wallpaper image was if you asked them. Others might remember but also know that they've long ago covered it up with documents and windows. There are many of us, though, who don't feel that a Mac is really a Mac until we have our preferred wallpaper in front of us.
If that's you, then you can make any image you like be your wallpaper and macOS makes it easy to add and change them. What it doesn't do is let you set your wallpaper to be a constantly looping video — yet you can get your Mac to do exactly that.
Be sure you want to do this, though. Then as a favor to assorted copyright enforcement agencies around the world, make the video be one that you own the rights. And as a personal favor to us, to anybody sitting next to you, and even to just your future self, please pick a video without any sound.
As well as the video, you will need the latest version of VLC. This free video player is usually used because it's able to play practically any type of movie file where iTunes, for instance, is much more limited.
VLC is free, open-source and runs on just about any type of computer you can imagine, and you already know what that means. It's never going to be the slickest Mac app in the world.
You should be able to just drag a video onto an app and know that it will play — and you can do that with VLC. It's just to do what we need now, we have to dig a little into its myriad settings.
Solution: AutoCAD for Mac and AutoCAD LT for Mac 2013 and earlier are not compatible with macOS 10.11.x (El Capitan). 
Launch VLC and choose Preferences from the VLC menu. A comprehensive series of options pops up but they're not quite comprehensive enough. Look for the Show All button at bottom left and click that.
In the new dialog that appears, click on Video in the left-hand column. Then tick Enable wallpaper mode.
You'd think that would be that. Get VLC, tick the wallpaper box and run some video. However, nothing will happen.
Nov 02, 2019 Os x could not be installed on you computer. No packages were eligible for install. What i did so far:-I rebuilt another usb drive from a new El Capitan freshly downloaded from the App store.-I formatted the hard drive, again.-I re tried to install but still the same.-I then held command+r and tried to install from there but I get the same issue. No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. Quit the installed to restart your computer and try again. I tried using 'Internet Recovery' (Option+Command+R) and a bootable USB drive that contained El Capitan, both of which ultimately failed with the same message. Is there a way to get this to work? Macos high sierra no packages were eligible for install.
Instead, having ticked that Enable wallpaper mode box and clicked on Save, you now need to quit VLC.
Dynamic Wallpapers For Macos
Quit it, open it again, and now drag a video into VLC's Playlist.
As soon as you do that, your regular wallpaper will be replaced by that video. For the opening moments, you'll also see the filename of the video displayed as a subtitle.
Video wallpaper is gimmicky. However, if you shot or had rights to something like the mesmerising journey around the Earth from space or SlowTV's ten hours of snow falling then you can see it being appealing.
It'd still be distracting, but maybe only a little more than Apple's dynamic desktop. Note that if you did choose a video with sound, you'll be more distracted by how that audio can sometimes go out of sync.
Nonetheless, at some point you're going to want to stop it. If you need to temporarily stop it because you can't see what you're looking for on your desktop, just go to VLC and choose Hide VLC from the VLC menu.
Alternatively, just quit VLC. However, the next time you launch it and play a video, it'll run as your wallpaper. So before you quit, go back to Preferences, Show All, Video, untick Enable wallpaper mode and then Save.

I admit: I'm fascinated by Apple's new Dynamic Desktop feature, which became widely available with the launch of macOS Mojave last week. There's just something magical about a wallpaper that shows a fixed-point view that changes as your day goes by.
However, Apple only offers two Dynamic Desktop wallpapers by default: One a beautiful photo of the Mojave desert, and the other a somewhat bland, ever-changing color gradient.
If that's not enough for you, there's a solution: A couple of them, in fact.

Back in June, developer Marcin Czachurski discovered that Apple's dynamic wallpapers are a bunch of images and a short text file describing certain properties of the image, such as altitude and azimuth (which pinpoint the position of the Sun when the image was taken).
With this knowledge, you can create a dynamic wallpaper yourself. The technical aspects of it, described here, aren't too complicated, and Czachurski even created a small command line app that makes it easier. But taking a bunch of high-quality photographs — especially if you want to do a fixed view of the same place at different times in the day — will likely be a bit much for most people.
Luckily, some crafty folks have already created dynamic wallpapers using this method. Czachurski himself shared a beautiful Google Earth-based wallpaper — you can find it here. And people on Reddit have shared their creations or findings here.

To make things a little easier, you can also move the .heic files to the /Library/Desktop Pictures folders, and Mojave will then list them as options when you go to Settings — Destkop & Screen Saver. Beware, though, that if the files aren't properly constructed, things can get messy; for example, Apple might not show the correct icons for these new dynamic backgrounds.
There's an even easier solution. An app called 24 Hour Wallpaper, available on Apple's App Store offers a total of 58 wallpapers. Some of these have a fixed view, while some are simply a mix of different images related to the same topic, but they all look pretty good. The app is compatible with macOS Mojave but it also works on older macOS versions, down to macOS 11.11. The catch is that the app is not free; it costs $6.99.
I've tested the app and it has a surprising amount of options, including the ability to choose any location in the world, customize sunrise and sunset times and set a 'playlist' that continuously changes your dynamic wallpaper to a different set of images at an interval of your choosing. You can set different wallpapers on different displays as well — though I haven't found an option to set a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop.
There's even an option to let macOS do the work, which disables most of the extra features and essentially just sets a new dynamic wallpaper while the app resides in the background as a simple wallpaper gallery.

Hopefully, someone will create a repository of dynamic wallpapers down the road and finding these will be as easy as finding a regular wallpaper. For now, though, any of the methods described above should quench your thirst for dynamic desktop goodness.
